Professional Development: The Sleep Health Crisis on College Campus: Causes, Consequences, and Culture Change
This presentation will: 1) Provide a snapshot of sleep health in college students, including factors both internal (sleep disorders, anxiety and depression) and external (discrimination, screen use, substance use, environmental conditions) that impact sleep timing and quality; 2) Explain how sleep health impacts decision-making, mood, academic performance, and mental and physical health; and 3) Discuss strategies campuses can use to better assess sleep disturbances and promote sleep-friendly campus policies and facilities.
J. Roxanne Prichard, Ph.D. is a professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biopsychology at Transylvania University (KY) where she fell in love with the field of sleep. She continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received a PhD in neuroscience. For the past 15 years, she has studied the connections between sleep, mental health, and academic performance in college students. Her research has appeared in PBS News Hour, the New York Times, Teen Vogue, and many other news outlets.
