Professional Development: Engaging the Unengaged Student (Sneaky Wellness/Prevention Education)

Session Description: Any higher education prevention professional knows the struggle of getting students to engage in their educational programming efforts on a college campus. Students are busy, overscheduled, and often won’t attend programs unless they are mandatory. Covid-19 has made this even more challenging, as many in-person programs are no longer an option. How do we continue to provide essential messaging for students in a way that will reach them? This workshop will help to identify alternative, creative and down-right sneaky prevention methods for engaging the unengaged student and also include a discussion of programming options in the time of Covid-19!

Participants will leave the presentation being able to distinguish the difference between active and passive programming, current and future challenges of engaging the iGen generation, and relatable and creative prevention techniques.

Jamie Cathcart: Jamie currently serves as the Title IX Coordinator for Trevecca Nazarene University. In this role, she is responsible for sexual violence prevention education and facilitating investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct. Prior to her role at Trevecca, she worked as the Director of the Wellness Center at St. Olaf College. She also serves as the chair of SWEET (Student Wellness Education and Engagement Team) at Trevecca.

CHASCo April 2024 Membership Meeting
By Kayce Matthews 18 Mar, 2024
Hello CHASCo Members, The annual Baxter Award recognizes the extraordinary contributions of CHASCo members who have gone above and beyond their everyday work to achieve excellence in higher education prevention programming. We are currently taking nominations for this award. Submit your nominations here by April 5, 2024. We have just extended the deadline to allow for additional submissions. Please note that all decisions and deliberations will be completed by the CHASCo Executive Committee. CHASCo staff is not involved in the decision-making process. Our executive committee will use a scoring system to evaluate the nominees on criteria including how the candidates have gone above and beyond to address the prevention of substance use, suicide, sexual or interpersonal violence, and related prevention issues; and their success at fostering cross-campus collaboration at the local, state, and/or national level. Best, Kayce
