2013 Partners in Prevention Conference Registration


We are pleased to have you join us for CHASCo's Partners in Prevention: Higher Education Alcohol and Other Drug and Violence Prevention Conference, which will be held at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee from Monday, May 20 through Tuesday, May 21, 2013. 

CHASCo’s Partners in Prevention is the premier higher education AODV prevention conference in Tennessee. Staff members from all campus departments and members of your community coalitions are invited to participate and will benefit from attending the conference.

Day One will start with opening remarks from CHASCo leadership and morning professional development sessions on topics relevant to your campus.  The afternoon will feature Dr. Thomas Vander Ven, the Associate Professor of Sociology at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His research interests include crime and delinquency, criminological theory, the sociology of alcohol, and the sociology of social problems. He is the author of Getting Wasted: Why College Students Drink Too Much and Party So Hard (NYU Press), a sociological study of the social accomplishment of alcohol use on campus and the collective management of the effects of heavy drinking. He has authored and co-authored articles on the social construction of underage drinking, college drinking practices, criminological theory, and the relationship between maternal employment and delinquency. His work has been published in Criminology, Crime and Delinquency, Deviant Behavior, the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, and Social Problems. Dr. Vander Ven is the recipient of the Outstanding University College Advocate Award (Ohio University, 2007), the Helen Coast Hayes Adventures in Learning Award (Honors Tutorial College, Ohio University, 2004) and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award (Ohio University, 2003). He currently holds the Eric Wagner Professorship for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (2009-11).

Day Two will feature Deb Thorstenson, the Director of Counseling, Health and Wellness at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. She is responsible for the overall administration of the department, which includes providing individual and group counseling, and oversees the implementation of programs that address high-risk behaviors of college students. She has over thirty years of experience in developing and implementing presentations, workshops, and trainings for youth, businesses, families and adults. This certified Level 3 chemical dependency counselor has a masters’ degree in counseling and over 20 years of experience in the counseling field and 30 years of background in prevention. In addition, she is the Regional Director for The Network: Addressing Collegiate Alcohol and Other Drug Issues for the MN-ND-SD region. In this role, she is a resource to Network members in the Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota region facilitating the exchange of information and coordinating staff development opportunities for AOD professionals. She has written and managed over $3,000,000 in external funding for the programs she oversees.  The conference will conclude with a presentation by Dr. Linda Peek Schacht, Executive Director, of the Nelson & Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership at Lipscomb University.

Registrants are responsible for making hotel reservations. Please make your reservation by May 3rd as CHASCo cannot guarantee there will be rooms available beyond this date. If you make the reservation after May 3rd, the block rate will be available until May 10th. Please call the hotel and reference "TICUA" group name for block pricing. The block begins on Sunday, May 19 through check-out Tuesday, May 21. The cost is $60 per night plus tax and CHASCo will reimburse lodging costs for higher education professionals. If you book a room and do not attend, then you will be responsible for the cost of lodging and CHASCo will not reimburse.

Although participation is encouraged for both days of the conference, CHASCo does have a one day registration option.  To register for just one day, please select the day you wish to register for below. CHASCo is paying for a significant amount for the conference, thus our expectation is for all registrants to attend unless an unforeseen conflict arises.
